Frequently asked questions

Our standard sunrise excursion generally takes around 12 hours. The trip begins during the night or very early in the morning, allowing time to reach the viewpoints before sunrise, explore the surrounding landscape, and return later in the day. The actual schedule may vary depending on your departure point, traffic, and conditions at the destination.

The area can be particularly cold before sunrise, with temperatures sometimes falling to approximately 5–10°C. Conditions vary with the season, elevation, and weather, so it is best to prepare for cold mornings rather than rely on the forecast alone.

For a comfortable visit, we recommend bringing:

  • A warm jacket, long trousers, and additional layers.
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes.
  • A hat or beanie and, if needed, gloves.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses for daytime activities.
  • A camera or smartphone.
  • Drinking water and light snacks.

Choose clothing that allows you to stay warm at the viewpoint without restricting movement when walking.

The dry season, usually between May and September, is often preferred because conditions may be more favorable for sightseeing and sunrise views. Nevertheless, weather in the mountains can change quickly, and clear skies cannot be guaranteed in any season.

Your most convenient route depends on where your journey begins. Travelers coming from Bali, Lombok, or other islands may find flights to Surabaya's Juanda International Airport practical. Those starting in Yogyakarta can consider an intercity train to Surabaya or Malang, followed by onward transportation to the Bromo area.

We recommend coordinating your arrival time with the tour's departure schedule before booking transport.

The usual visit is manageable for many travelers, but the terrain still requires walking across volcanic sand and climbing stairs to reach the crater rim. The walking time varies with your pace, route, and physical condition.

Guests should be comfortable with uneven ground and moderate physical activity. Anyone with mobility limitations or health concerns should discuss their needs with us before confirming a tour.

Yes. Tours can generally be arranged during Ramadan, subject to operational schedules, destination access, and local conditions. Visitor numbers may differ from those during other periods, but lower crowds are not guaranteed. Travelers observing the fast should let us know about relevant meal or scheduling requirements in advance.

Rain does not automatically mean that a trip must be cancelled. However, it can reduce visibility, obscure the sunrise, and make walking surfaces more slippery. We will consider the circumstances and applicable safety instructions when determining whether the itinerary can proceed or requires adjustment.

Please remember that mountain weather is unpredictable, and a particular view or sunrise cannot be guaranteed.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano, so its conditions must be taken seriously. Access and permitted activities can change in response to volcanic activity or instructions from the relevant authorities.

We expect guests to follow official restrictions and their guide's safety instructions. The appearance or color of smoke from the crater should never be used as a personal indication that the volcano is safe to approach.

Wild monkeys may sometimes be seen near popular viewpoints. Wildlife sightings are unpredictable, so there is no guarantee that you will encounter any animals during your visit. Please observe wildlife from a safe distance and avoid feeding it.

Families can visit Mount Bromo, but suitability depends on the child's age, physical condition, and ability to cope with cold temperatures, long travel hours, and uneven volcanic terrain. Jeep transfers can reduce some walking, although visitors may still need to walk or climb stairs at certain locations.

Parents and guardians should supervise children throughout the excursion.

Older guests are welcome to inquire about joining, although the itinerary may require walking on sand, navigating uneven surfaces, and climbing steps. Jeep transportation and other local services may help with certain parts of the journey, but they do not eliminate every physical challenge.

Please share any mobility requirements in advance so the itinerary can be assessed appropriately.

Regular sneakers with good grip are generally suitable for the standard Mount Bromo sightseeing route. Closed-toe footwear is preferable because volcanic sand and uneven ground can be uncomfortable underfoot. Flip-flops and other loose footwear are not recommended.

Temperatures can be low during nighttime and pre-dawn trekking. We recommend bringing warm layers, sturdy shoes with good traction, drinking water, light snacks, and a camera or smartphone. A face covering or other protective equipment should only be used according to current local guidance and your guide's instructions.

The highest point commonly associated with the Ijen volcanic complex is approximately 2,799 metres above sea level. The crater rim and the route followed by visitors are at different elevations, so your actual trekking altitude will depend on the route and destination access.

May through September is generally considered part of the drier season and can offer more favorable trekking conditions. However, weather, visibility, trail conditions, and access regulations can vary throughout the year.

The opportunity to see the blue flames is also dependent on conditions at the time of your visit.

The hike is commonly considered moderate to strenuous, depending on your fitness and the conditions on the trail. The uphill route is approximately 3 kilometres and may take around 1.5–2 hours, although individual times vary.

Expect a sustained climb, uneven terrain, and potentially cold conditions. A reasonable level of physical fitness and appropriate preparation are strongly recommended.

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for cold nighttime temperatures, together with sturdy hiking shoes that provide reliable traction. A warm jacket or additional insulating layers are especially useful before sunrise.

Avoid open footwear and shoes with slippery soles, as the trail can be uneven and difficult under certain conditions.

Age requirements and access rules may depend on current regulations and the conditions of the excursion. Regardless of age, the climb may be unsuitable for very young children, people with limited mobility, or travelers who are not prepared for sustained uphill walking.

Children should remain under adult supervision, and specific eligibility requirements should be confirmed before booking.

The blue flames are one of Ijen's best-known attractions and may be visible during the hours before sunrise. However, witnessing this phenomenon is not guaranteed.

Visibility, weather, volcanic conditions, and restrictions on access to the crater area can all affect the experience. The blue fire should never take priority over safety or official access rules.

That depends on the intensity of the rain and the conditions on the mountain. Wet weather can reduce visibility, make the trail slippery, and increase the difficulty of the climb. The tour may need to be modified, delayed, or cancelled if conditions are considered unsafe.

Please be aware that neither the blue flames nor clear views can be guaranteed during unfavorable weather.

Well-fitting sneakers with good grip may be sufficient for some visitors, but sturdy hiking shoes are a better choice for the uneven trail. Flip-flops and shoes with smooth soles should be avoided because they provide inadequate stability and protection.

The drier months, generally from May to September, are often preferred for sightseeing and trekking. Even during this period, conditions may change, and rainfall can affect visibility, trail surfaces, and access to the waterfall.

The safety of the route should always take precedence over seasonal preferences.

Reaching the lower waterfall area typically involves a steep descent that may take around 40 minutes, depending on your pace and the trail conditions. Additional time may be required to explore the surrounding area and return to the starting point.

The descent and ascent can be considerably more demanding than viewing the waterfall from an accessible lookout.

The route to the lower area can be strenuous. Visitors may encounter narrow steps, slippery slopes, uneven ground, stream crossings, and sections that require careful footing.

A reasonable level of fitness, suitable footwear, and attention to your guide's instructions are important. Travelers who are uncomfortable with steep or slippery terrain may prefer to experience the waterfall from an upper viewpoint instead.

Water conditions at the waterfall can be unpredictable, and strong currents, rising water levels, or slippery rocks may create serious hazards. Do not assume that swimming is permitted or safe simply because a pool is accessible.

Follow local rules, posted restrictions, and your guide's advice. Never enter the water when conditions are unsafe.

We suggest packing the following items:

  • Shoes with good grip for steep and potentially slippery trails.
  • A change of clothes in case you get wet.
  • A waterproof bag for your phone, camera, and other electronics.
  • Drinking water and suitable personal essentials.
  • A camera or smartphone for photographs.

Pack light enough to move comfortably along the trail, and keep electronic equipment protected from spray and rain.

Specific restrictions may depend on current local rules and the route being visited. Even where no formal minimum age applies, the steep descent can be unsuitable for young children or travelers who have difficulty walking on slippery or uneven surfaces.

Children must be supervised by an accompanying adult, and the difficulty of the route should be considered before the visit.

Facilities around Tumpak Sewu are relatively basic compared with those in larger tourist centers. Small vendors may sell snacks and drinks near the entrance, and basic toilet facilities may be available. Availability can vary, so it is sensible to bring essential supplies with you.

Depending on your schedule and the accessibility of the area, you may be able to visit nearby natural attractions such as Goa Tetes Cave or Kapas Biru Waterfall. These destinations offer different scenery and walking experiences, but adding them may require more time and additional transportation arrangements.

Please discuss extra stops with our team before your tour so we can determine whether they fit your itinerary.

Visiting during periods of heavy rain requires additional caution. Steep paths can become extremely slippery, water levels may rise, and flooding or other hazards may make certain sections inaccessible.

If conditions are unsafe, access may need to be restricted or the planned visit changed. We recommend following local guidance and prioritizing safety over completing every planned stop.

Zoë

Our guide Alex picked us up at the hotel at 1 am together with the driver. The communication beforehand was clear and swift, so we were prepared well for the trip. Alex was very patient with us doing the hikes up to the viewpoint and later the Bromo crater. And over all wonderful company, he knows a lot about the area. 10/10 highly recommend!!

Sarah Mitchell

Our guide had us at the Bromo viewpoint before any of the tour buses arrived. Having the jeep to ourselves made the whole sunrise feel a lot less rushed.

Daniel Ochoa

Did the Ijen blue fire hike with just my partner and the guide. Steep and cold at 2am, but he paced it well and had masks ready for the sulfur smoke.

Priya Nair

Tumpak Sewu was the highlight of our trip. Pickup from Malang ran about 20 minutes late, but the driver kept us updated the whole time.

Tomás Ferreira

Booked the 4-day grand tour. Every vehicle swap and hotel change-over was handled without us having to think about it.

Hana Kobayashi

Solo traveler, was a bit nervous about a private tour, but it ended up being more comfortable than a group van. Guide answered questions in English easily.

Marcus Webb

Good value for a private trip. Would suggest packing warmer layers than the packing list mentions — Bromo before sunrise is properly cold.

Elena Petrova

Booked last minute for a 1-day Bromo trip and they still managed to arrange everything within a few hours. Jeep driver knew exactly where to stop for photos.
